Common Vapi issues

  • Long time-to-first-word

    If the first response takes >1.5s, you're paying for a cold LLM route or a non-streaming TTS. Switch to a smaller first-turn model and enable streaming on the TTS provider.

  • Agent talks over the caller

    Barge-in tuning is under Assistant → Advanced. If interruptions still miss, the STT endpointing threshold is too high — lower it and shorten the silence timeout.

  • Twilio outbound call fails immediately

    Vapi returns a 200 but the call errors on Twilio. Almost always: the caller-ID number isn't verified on the Twilio account, or the destination country isn't enabled.
